Custom 3D-Printed Protective Covers Support Equipment Upgrades for European Automation Client
Custom 3D-Printed Protective Covers Support Equipment Upgrades for European Automation Client
A European automation equipment supplier needed new protective covers for an upgraded machine platform. Because the equipment structure had changed, standard off-the-shelf enclosures no longer matched the revised dimensions, mounting points, and interface locations.
For a small-batch upgrade project, traditional manufacturing methods such as CNC machining or injection molding would have involved higher upfront costs and longer lead times. The client therefore required a more flexible solution that could support rapid equipment iteration and trial operation.
The Challenge
The project required a small batch of customized protective covers featuring:
- Reserved openings for cables and interfaces
- Precise mounting holes
- Contoured surfaces matching the equipment structure
- Sufficient toughness for industrial use
- Fast production without tooling
Since the parts were intended for equipment testing and iterative upgrades rather than mass production, flexibility, fit, and delivery speed were the main priorities.
Our 3D-Printing Solution
We selected high-toughness ABS for the protective covers and optimized the design according to the client's installation requirements.
Our engineering team adjusted wall thickness, mounting areas, and local structural reinforcement to improve part strength and assembly reliability while maintaining the required geometry.
The finished covers were produced to provide suitable impact resistance, basic dust protection, and accurate assembly for the client's automation equipment.
Project Results
- Small-batch production completed within 4 working days
- No tooling or mold-opening costs required
- Custom openings, mounting holes, and curved surfaces matched the equipment configuration
- Supported the client's equipment upgrade, trial operation, and preliminary market testing schedule
A Flexible Solution for Equipment Upgrades
For industrial equipment manufacturers, design changes do not always justify investing in new molds or conventional tooling.
3D printing provides a practical solution for low-volume protective covers, customized enclosures, replacement components, and equipment upgrade parts, especially when designs are still evolving.
It allows manufacturers to move from digital design to functional parts more quickly while reducing the cost and risk of small-batch customization.
